Almost a year ...

Okay,

I was packing to move and stumbled (literally) on the "box of slides". I realized that it has been a fair amount of time since I've updated this blog. Almost a year! Really? Well, let's just say that my scanner was giving me fits with these slides, and to be quite honest my life took the reigns for the past year. BUT, I am moving now, and getting a somewhat-proper office, so I am going to re-focus some kind of attention on these slides. I may redo what is seen here, and actually spend time color correcting some of these, but in any case I want to finish what I started. I need to finish what I started. Keep an eye out in November.

Okay, here's number one. I'm pulling these slides randomly in hopes that over time I will see a pattern, or see something in the way Mr. Mass chose his shots that maybe I wouldn't see if I thought too much about them prior to scanning. So, the slides are also titled...including the date, film (?), and a title. There are locations on some and I will include those when possible.

Henry Mass - photographer

Long-time PSA member Henry Mass passed away in Port Jefferson, NY, in late April at the age of 90. He was born the 13th of January, 1914, in Brooklyn, NY, and lived there most of his life. He made his living as a salesman.

Henry and his late wife Sylvia joined PSA in April of 1966. In 1967, they founded Colorama as the first camera club in Brooklyn. Mr. Mass was a landscape and portrait photographer that used his photography to share with others by giving many shows in New York as well as in Asia. He was a Charter Member of PSA Cosmopolitan Chapter and its first treasurer. Henry was named an Associate of the PSA in 1972 and in 1980 was named a Fellow. He had earned a Service, as well as other awards.

In 1989, together with Sydney Goldstein, FPSA, Henry and Sylvia Mass formed the now defunct Photographic Alliance of the USA (PAUSA) as the American affiliate of Federation International Art Photographic (FIAP). As this country's national federation for FIAP, American photographers could then apply for FlAP distinctions. Henry Mass was associated with PAUSA for seven years and was awarded Honorary FLAP, the single such distinction allowed in the country.

Henry Mass served the photographic community and PSA in many ways.

This blog is meant as a forum to document the found photos of Mr. Henry Mass. These slides were found (purchased) in a "junk" shop in Knoxville, Tennessee in 2005. They were all taken in Portugal by Mr. Mass, and this blog serves as a place for me to scan and organize these photos into groups/categories that make sense....also, I want to highlight the collection that Mr. Mass took obvious pains and hours to amass, curate, and preserve for future viewing. I have attempted to contact friends and relatives of Mr. Mass to no avail, and will continue to do so as I would like to get formal permission to share this work. As it is, I would like to say that all of the photos here are being roughly scanned by myself (very roughly) only as placeholder for eventual professional scans, and that all of the work on this blog is the property of Mr. Henry Mass and his estate (I only own the physical slides...not the years of hard work).
